Movie Mog: Brave

I keep seeing entries for Matty’s Movie Mog Contest around the blogosphere during my tidying of the Reader and blogroll adventures and thought it’d be fun to join in!

I spend a lot of time just playing with MogIt ((I’m planning to do a guide on how to use it soon as I’ve had a lot of questions about this)) so piece of cake.

My favourite movie is non-existent. Not only am I not a big movie watcher, but when I do I tend to keep adding to the list of favourites so I thought I’d go with one that made an impact on me recently: Pixar’s Brave. Yeah, it took me this long to watch it but Merida is an amazing character, the exploration of the bond between mother and daughter is utterly amazing, and the Celtic fantasy world it is set in had the fantasy and history geek in me jumping up and down.

While I know the rules said three characters, I wasn’t entirely sure how to mog the three little brothers or the gigantic dad so have two. I’m also aware that this particular mog would have looked better with a cloth robe but Merida would have to be a Hunter mog and so it had to be mail. This is also how I managed two characters!

Merida and her mother

A better image to base Merida’s transmog on

- For the robe look I’ve combined Wave of Life Chestguard with Kilt of Spiritual Reconstruction and popped on a Blue Workman’s Shirt for the sleeves.
- The bow is Satyr’s Bow from Dire Maul.
- Sadly I can’t add in a quiver but I have used Fortified Belt for the tan strap attaching the quiver to her.
- And the cloak is Blackmetal Cape. The only cloaks I found any plainer were too short or golden edged so I thought the Celtic-styled pattern suited the character quite nicely.

As for the bits I’ve not included in my image, but just to complete the mog for folk who might like to wear this I’ve gone with Grunt’s Pauldrons for the shoulders which both match and can be reasonably ignorable. Fastfuse Gloves suit the set quite well and don’t hide her hands completely. As for boots, I’m not 100% sure what boots she’s wearing so go wild and pick something brown. I equipped Plane-Shifted Boots at random trying to go for a basic look.

If only Gnomes could be ginger… This image of the family inspired me to complete Merida’s mother’s human outfit

For Merida’s mother I was able to use cloth – woohoo! When it comes to weapon, I’d go with something gold but her mother isn’t seen wielding a weapon so I haven’t included one in the image.

- For this robe I thought Conjurer’s Robe has the right pattern to make it look as though it flares to match the characters’ dress. Sadly the sleeves aren’t flared so I had to make do with coupling it with a Cerulean Filigreed Doublet, which is available from Dalaran. The colours aren’t perfect but the look is much better than without. And trust me when I say the sleeves are flared ingame, WMV is just stubborn.
- The belt took me a little bit of browsing but Ruthless Gladiator’s Cord of Accuracy is the best I could find to suit her golden chain-belt style. With the pattern on the robe, it gets away with not having the chain hanging down at the front.
- The crown absolutely has to be Eye of Theradras.
- And I threw in the Mistyreed Gloves as well. They don’t cover the sleeves and hide reasonably well too.

The shoulders not featured in the image I think suit best are Green Silken Shoulders. Again, they match with the colour scheme without standing out too much. And shoes, again.. go nuts. I’m not sure you ever really see Merida’s mother’s feet but I just went with Boots of the Mourning Widow.

I’d love to see more entries for this contest, it’s a lot of fun!

Then and Now: Seithir Edition

Oh you guys are mean. Like.. I was about to go read and then you all had to come up with this meme that lets me show off some of those old screenies of my Priest that I was looking through the other day? Think I could just walk away from that? Well.. I blame Vid. Jus’ sayin’.

So, Seithir. She’s not my first character.. my first character would have been much more interesting, actually, considering the race change, but Seithir is definitely my longest running character, and has been my main for the longest amount of time of any character.

TBC

Yeah. I did a lot of Aldor bank afking in TBC.

Oh who left that there?! That’s not me with that Gnome that’s.. err.. yeah okay, me and Imnotshort may have had a short stint. But it really meant something, guys! And don’t tell him but he was, in fact, rather short.

So, the earliest known screenshot I have of Seithir is thus:

This must have been around level 20ish, looking at my gear. RFC robe, shoulders (zomg), and the staff from the end group quest in Ghostlands. What I’m doing in The Barrens remains to be seen but I’m sure I was quite smitten with my new main actually having flesh on her elbows.

And at level 70:

She looked liked that for a large part of TBC until she finally got the full BT/Hyjal set, of which I can’t find a screenshot of her wearing, oddly enough, but I did always like this screenshot of me in my healing gear and Lew (the friend who hosts my blogs) playing around with Holy Nova.

And you really want to see my TBC UI? Are you sure? *cringe* My UI is constantly undergoing change. Even back then. But here’s an action shot from a BT run…

The worst part? I didn’t see what the problem was!! At least my bars had the right spells on them I guess. But why I had 2 raid frames is beyond me. I guess I hadn’t discovered Clique yet.

Wrath

This is the best screenshot from Wrath that I could find of my Priest.. hmm..

But here is my UI:

At least I understood it was messy this time, but I was cool with it! I kind of miss those profile bars. They looked cool.

And just for funsies:

Oh Steve, I miss you. ((Steve is the rhino.))

Cata

We all know that I have played WoW a lot less in Cataclysm and calmed down a lot but I’m still going, and looking back on these screenshots has only reminded me of why I loved this game. It has always been the people, and once you remove the people and replace them with people who could quite happily called trade chat their guild.. well it takes all of the fun out of it. So I play a lot more casually these days and here is my Priest currently.

Transmog has changed a lot for me. I’m so much more comfortable playing around with different pieces of gear. As you can see in the picture from TBC, I was a Tailor and that gear was irreplaceable until Tier 6. I didn’t get to run around in Tier 4 because it just wasn’t good and Tier 5 was hard to get, so I’m finally using the Tier 4 I’ve always loved and that gorgeous halo. I do have further ideas for this set, but you shall have to watch this space for that!

And my UI currently.. this is the best in combat screenshot I could find. I wish I had better but apparently I don’t screenshot my UI so much these days. I do use Quartz though and I’ve lessened how much Forte shows once again. I’ve always liked having the information I need in front of me, which is why my action bars are always full.

Well I think we can all agree that not as much love has gone into it as my Wrath UI but I REALLY hate designing my UI. REALLY. Spending the time on it makes me tear my hair out and when it goes wrong I just want to scream. Perhaps it’s reminiscent of how my love for the game has waned, or perhaps it just shows I’d rather put my time into playing. I couldn’t say, but that’s my ‘Then and Now’ for Seithir, who I didn’t play as much in Wrath as I thought I did. But I can assure you that she will always be the character that I am most attached to.

Whether I’m still playing in a year or not is beyond me, I might be, I might not be, but in retrospect, I don’t regret a single one of those days that I was playing. I thought I might when I eventually come to quit, but I’ve had some wonderful memories with this game and if I never played and took a chance, I wouldn’t be with my wonderful fiancé now who I have been with for over 4 years now. World of Warcraft will always mean a lot to me.

“Sixth”

Tagged by Apple Cider and Saxsy at I Like Pancakes, huzzah! And set off by Gnomey.

  • Go into your image folder
  • Open the sixth sub-folder and choose the sixth image.
  • Publish the image! (and a few words wouldn’t hurt, though I dare say I couln’t stop a blogger from adding a few words of their own).
  • Challenge six new bloggers.
  • Link to them.

Umm… how did this get there? *shifty eyes*

I ended up in my Burning Crusade folder and this was the sixth image in there! There were many, many better though, I dare say. Ha. This was during a ZA run back in my first guild, Capo, around the time it was dying admittedly but we still had a bit of fun at this point. The dead Blood Elf had “disconnected”. Myself and the cow are apparently voyeurs. *shrug* Go figure!

I challenge.. (and oh GOD it’s hard to pick 6 people)

  1. Fulguralis
  2. Rades
  3. Laeleiweyn
  4. Ophelie
  5. Ironyca
  6. Cynwise

Through Your Interface: Player Housing

Through Your Interface is a 15 day screenshot challenge put forward by Saz of World of Saz. Feel free to join in – the more the merrier!

Day two is: Player Housing
If you were to claim a place to call your own, where would it be and why?

Whilst I couldn’t think of a suitable building to portray the player housing, I know exactly where I belong ingame and where I would want my player housing to be. Even though I’m slightly favouring the Goblins these days, and they do have some wonderful architecture, and even though I’d much rather be playing a Draenei, my favourite place ingame is still Silvermoon and the surrounding area. The colouring is just beautiful. I love autumn and this is most definitely where I belong in Azeroth.

Through Your Interface: Favourite Hangout

Through Your Interface is a 15 day screenshot challenge put forward by Saz of World of Saz. Feel free to join in – the more the merrier!

Day one is: Favourite hangout
Find yourself perching in a particular tree as a druid? Have a certain hovel you like to hang out in on your undead rogue? Show us where it is, and why your character hangs out there.

When I’m afking, you can usually find me here. I like to stick to the main city (on Alliance side I always preferred Ironforge but same deal as Horde, Stormwind is easier these days. So I migrated to the Dwarven District as there is also an anvil there so it’s perfect for my Blacksmithing Death Knight) because this is where the portals and the main zeppelin hub is, and the people, of course. It’s not exactly the “main” area in Orgrimmar, that still seems to be near the front gates, but that is also the laggiest part and I just don’t care for it. I don’t like Orcs, and I don’t like the black spikiness. New Orgrimmar is horrid, and so I chill with the cows and the little waterfall (can’t see in this screenshot, it’s behind the camera). It’s rather lovely being so close to the portals as well. Ideally, I’d like to hang out in Thunder Bluff but it’s too far away from everything. Yeah, I’m lazy. Or, perhaps, here:

I discovered this spot yesterday when I was fishing and I fell in love a little bit. It’s so gorgeous. The trouble is, when I’m ingame I don’t do very much actual ‘afking’. I’ll usually either quest or farm while I wait for groups to pop and it’s too useful to be near auction houses, banks, and portals.

What about you, where is your favourite hangout spot?

My Dream MMO

This is a Blog Azeroth shared topic, originally found here. You can find other replies at Violet Scribe and Tank Out Of Water. The question is:

“If you didn’t have to worry about finance, what MMO would you make? What lessons would you take from WoW or other games? What would you do to attract players?”

I’ve wanted to do a post on this very topic for quite a while, in fact, Naithin tagged me ((Okay, so that was the settings rather than the mechanics, but that’s a much bigger topic! For settings, I like something semi-original.. We’ll exclude LotRO from that statement because playing in a fantasy world I’ve been in love with since I was about, what, 13? Is fantastic and full of fangirly moments.)) to do it back when I was pondering and I even saved a draft to remind myself, I just never got around to doing it. I have been keeping my eye on the shared topics since I came back incase anything caught my eye. Up until now I’ve had nothing really to say on any of them, but this is one I had been pondering. My biggest issue is story and how to keep the players gripped, and I suppose this is more of a mish-mash of the things I’ve liked from other games, but it is my dream MMO. These are the features that I’d like to see in my imaginary favourite game.

Genre

I’m starting with the genre because all games need a starting point. It’s all well and good saying “we’ll get rid of quests!” but if you don’t even have a genre, then it isn’t much of a starting point because you can’t decide what you’re going to replace the quests with. I’m not sure what my story would be, I’m not actually a game developer so it’s not so important, but I’m definitely thinking of a fantasy MMO here. Perhaps an urban fantasy, but still a fantasy nonetheless. It’s just my personal preference. I love magic, and big two-handed axes, and riding around on fantastical creatures, and internet dragons too much to move away from that genre, I’m just not sure how to make it different. How about a steampunk urban fantasy with an anime-esque feel, kind of ‘Full Metal Alchemist’ style? I fully believe that a deep and rich storyline, and a sense of humour is one of the most important aspects of a good MMO.

Progression

I adore Guild War 2′s ideas of a much more dynamic levelling experience. I like the idea of using exploration, finding ancient cairns on mountain tops that you have to really work hard to find your way up, and when you get up there find the most amazing views, and great secluded spots for group roleplay. Then you explore some more, and come across a village under siege and instead of static quest givers saying, “Please help me, my house is on fire, there’s a water bucket here, you just have to run over there and throw it on!” (Which I always found lazy) The NPCs in the area are already getting stuck in, and instead of quests, they shout for your help, and can either move along and leave them to it, or you can join in and get rewards and experience. There would be different levels of these opportunities. The bigger events rewarding more experience and items would be rarer, as opposed to the small events which would be just as common as quests, just a lot less static feeling, a lot more like the newer WoW quests, and you could level from doing these things. Though if you wanted there would be instances and PvP and perhaps there could be experience given for completing different exploration tasks. There would be no more, “Kill 10 pigs over there, they’re eating ma lettuces.” It’s dynamic, fun content that changes. More like an instance, or a single player RPG like Dragon Age than an MMO, but you could group with people. The tougher the ‘event’ you’re trying to do, the more you benefit from grouping with people. It would take a little longer to reach max level than it does in Rift or current WoW, but that’s all part of the game, the journey. The faster it goes, the faster people get bored. Keep it going and keep it interesting.

Activities

If there’s nothing to do at max-level from the get go, people won’t stick around. My MMO would of course focus on making the levelling experience as fun as possible first but there would also be different things to do once you reach the end. For an MMO to be and remain fun, there needs to be choice. Incorporate dungeons, heroic dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, arenas, rated arenas, rich lore and places for players to use for roleplay, achievements, things to explore, pets and mounts to collect. It would have cross-server battlegrounds for better queue times, and a dungeon finder more like an announcement board than anything automated. You could sign up as interested for whatever dungeons you want to do and write a note for anybody who might be looking for people for a group to see. Equally, if you’re a group leader looking for members, you could sign up with your group and put a notice up with any specifications you might have. There would need to be things to aim for: plenty of gear to go after, appearance clothes to find, pvp gear to get, interesting things to craft which perhaps require rare materials to make. Then there are titles and mounts and such that really make your character feel like your character, rather than another one of the masses. If there isn’t enough to aim for, then the end game just wouldn’t be worth it.

Professions

As for professions, I actually really liked the way Aion did professions. Okay, it could be a bit of a pain finding the right items if you wanted to craft something, and often the materials were overpriced on the auction house, but they had repeatable workorders that scaled with your skill level and everytime you crafted something it would give you a tiny bit of experience. My MMO would probably use something similar. It would give you a bit of experience, enough to level if you really wanted to, probably the equivalent of how much you get in WoW from mining a node, so enough but not too much. It would use the repeatable workorders idea – you could pick up 2 or 3 workorders at a time, buy the items from a vendor in the same room, craft them, hand them in (again for a small amount of experience), and you would gain skill points and a reward bag which might give you recipes/patterns, materials, maybe a rare chance for a companion pet, a flavour item, or maybe some appearance gear depending on the profession you’re working on. If that’s too tedious, you could level by crafting items as and when you have the materials, though unlike in Aion, these would be a fair bit easier to get your hands on.

Variety

My biggest gripe with any MMO is variety. This is in reference to hair, facial expressions, skin colour, tattoos, body size, height, clothes, basically anything that differentiates one character from the next. My MMO’s character creation screen would have all of those options. There would be presets to choose from and a randomizer for people who don’t care what size their character’s nose is, and a name randomizer as well. For those of us it’s important to, there would be plenty to customise, everything I mentioned above, plus you could choose between a few, maybe 2 or 3, starter gear sets and choose what colour your starter gear set would be. Each class would have different options, but different races would share the same choices, or perhaps there would only be the colour changing choice and each race would have a different option as well. I like the idea of characters looking different from the get go. If you wanted to, you could easily spend a couple of hours perfecting your character. And once you’ve finished creating your character, each race would have its’ own starter zone with its’ own lore. Perhaps there would be slight differences in how people treat you depending on your class.

Once you get further in the game, you have the issue of appearance homogenisation. Everybody starts to look the same because they’re in the same levelling gear and riding the same faction mount. I’ve already mentioned mounts, but there would also be companion pets to go after. There would be a barber shop in which you can change hair and makeup, but nothing related to physical appearance because that would require plastic surgery. There would be both armour dyes and appearance slots, because it’s nice to be able to really customise your character, and for people who really like to collect gear sets for appearances or off-specs, a wardrobe feature. This would initially have a limited number of slots, but you could perhaps provide ingame currency to up it, the same way you can with bag slots.

So, what about you? What would be your dream MMO?

Confessions of a Secret Alt-aholic

I was quite excited when I checked my emails last night and found my secret santa from Lodur, enjoy :)

For what has been many, many years now, people have known me as Lodur. The Shaman healer addicted to quite literally all things Shamanistic. While I love and adore my Shaman, and he will forever be my main, it is something of a little known fact that I am indeed an alt-aholic. Now, I don’t attend any meetings or anything like that, but there is just something gratifying in being able to change my identity sometimes and roll an alt.

I have well over 50 World of Warcraft characters, scattered across many, many servers. Only about 15 or them are Shaman though, the rest run the gambit of every available class, and every available race. That’s just really part of the fun in WoW. Just having options.

So when I’m not raiding or writing about the joys of Shamanism, I can be found on one of my many alts. The one above here is Zabonk, my Goblin Shaman. I’ve really enjoyed playing as a Goblin recently simply because I adore their casting animations, the story behind them, all of their emotes and everything in between. It’s such a large departure from Draenei and Dwarves for me that it is engrossing and fun. It’s also nice to see how the questing is different for Horde now. Back when WoW first started, I played a Horde character as my very first toon. Those were some very fun days, and fond memories, and as I’m playing again on Horde side with friends and family I’m starting to enjoy it all over again.

Back on Alliance side, on my home server of Zul’jin I have an army of alts as well. Chief among them is my formerly Night Elf, but newly made Worgen Hunter Abigail. She is the longest living of my surviving characters from the days of vanilla. Shortly after the game was released, my friends that I was playing with changed servers, and changed factions. They migrated to Zul’jin and rolled Alliance. Sad that I could not make a Tauren Shaman, I settled for a Night Elf Hunter. I raided and loved that toon all the way through to the Burning Crusade’s release, where I was able to roll my beloved Shaman class and still play with my friends. Personally I never really cared for Night Elves, and so when Cataclysm was released, I made it a point to race change her to a Worgen. I’ve been falling in love with the Hunter class all over again, and have been collecting pets fairly aggressively. Here’s a picture of Abi with her lovely fox, Guy Fawkes.

I’ve also been spending a lot of time on a Paladin alt, Tamisa, learning how to tank, and making my way up to level 85. She’s a Draenei, and I felt as though I needed to keep at least one active alt as a so called Blueberry. Here she is on her sparkle pony hanging out in Ironforge. She may or may not have a problem holding her Dwarven Ale!

But this is what I spend my downtime doing. I make alts. I play them, learn about their classes and really just have a great time doing it. I never really get bored of the leveling process, it’s almost like a guilty pleasure of mine. Whenever I’m bored, I roll an alt. Friends want to start playing and want a leveling buddy, I roll an alt. The options are near limitless. I have alts on PvP servers, alts on Role-Playing servers, and more than one of them is heroic and raid ready. Now, thanks to this blog, I have a renewed desire to try out my Priest alt. I started her a long while ago, but haven’t really had the gumption to really dive back in. Since Cataclysm’s release though, I think I feel the need to bring Mara Jade out of retirement and melt some faces.

So, if you’re a secret (or not so secret) alt-aholic, I salute you. If you ever find yourself in the area of Zul’jin and looking for someone to alt around with, I’ll be more than happy to roll one, or level one with you.

First Day of Cataclysm

I did enter initial thoughts on Cataclysm as a Blog Azeroth shared topic so feel free to go see what everybody else is saying. :)

Around 1 or 2 in the afternoon yesterday, I went downstairs to watch the last episode of Merlin and wait for the hopefully arriving soon City Link van. As I went to grab a drink, guess who pulled up outside? Yeah, so I never got around to watching Merlin in the end but my Collector’s Edition arrived and my God I wasn’t prepared for how huge this thing is! I got the game (obviously), the mouse mat because I had a tiny crap little thing because I’m too stingy to pay £20 for one, and the Landro’s Gift lootcard (eeh!) which for some reason I couldn’t redeem, have opened a ticket about that but that could be a while before it’s answered, not to worry, it’s not *too* important. Anyway, so I installed the game after much squeeing, and went off to Hyjal.

Initial thoughts: Oh my God it’s pretty and there’s Ysera oh my God and the faerie dragons and the flying and the – I’ll stop there, that could go on for a while really. I was going to go to Vashj’ir first but as Hyjal has Guardians of Hyjal rep, which is where I’ll be getting my helm enchant from, I went over there. After completing the zone (and oh my God, if you haven’t yet – DO IT! So much lore, the last few quests are amazing) I was a little bit into revered, I’ll keep the tabard on until exalted just to get the reduced price on the helm enchant but the quests really are a nice big rep boost. And did anybody else find themselves doing this?

TWO SPEEDY'S

We did a Blackrock Caverns, which is pretty cool, reminds me a bit of Forge of Souls and I love Beauty’s pups. We also did a Throne of the Tides which had a Slave Pens feel to it, I thought. Both were good, but I can see them getting repetitive after a while no doubt.

After I’d finished in Hyjal, I decided to run around and get instance entrance discoveries. I didn’t bother with Grim Batol yet, but I grabbed The Stonecore and the 3 in Uldum and I had a fly around Uldum. Oh. My. God. Uldum is amazing. It’s big, and epic looking, and well designed. It’s also the next rep I’ll be going for, so I can’t wait to start there, but once I’d finally found The Vortex Pinnacle I headed back to Deepholm to quest there, because at this point I was only 82. Still am in fact so time for an abrupt end to a blog post.

Where did you start? Anything that has stood out in your mind?

20 Days of Warcraft – IRL Race/Class

Day 9 – Which race/class combination are you most like in RL?

Well, I want to say Night Elf Mage but reeeally, no. Tauren Druid.

Night Elves are tall, mysterious, beautiful, and… blue. Okay, so we can’t have everything, but Elves are cool, kay? And I’d rather be a Night Elf than a Blood Elf if we’re talking IRL land here. Mages are great cooks, they can turn people into different animals, set things on fire just by thinking about it, quick transportation what’s not to love?

If I’m honest though, that’s what I’d like to be. The question is which are you ‘most like’, and so I say Tauren Druid. No, I’m not a giant bipedal cow, or hairy, but I’m not thin and slender, so body size I’d say that makes the most sense.. except for the cow part. I couldn’t be a Dwarf because I’m not short. Plus, I’m fairly gentle in nature, so the other Horde races don’t suit me much either. That also rules out Human.

I say Druid because, well, I wouldn’t be too good with weapons, I think the elements would hate me, but I do like nature. Whilst I can’t turn into a bear or a cat on a whim, Druid seems to fit the most. Plus I always wanted to be a cat when I was a kid (I don’t know either).

20 Days of Warcraft – Guild Names

Day 8 – Favourite guild name you’ve come across?

I’m going to have to say that I love a funny name, or a good reference. I get bored of all the latin and single word guild names, and so I present my two favourite guild names:

  • Pining for the Fjords
  • Pretentious Latin Name

Knowing that Pining for the Fjords was taken on Vashj, because that’s where I stole it from, I had to make this guild! So I made it as my bank guild on Terenas.. however, it’s so good I use it for my guild over there. I’ve always been a big Monty Python freak and I absolutely adore this reference!

Pretentious Latin Name I spotted on Terenas, a fair while before Single Abstract Noun came to be, in fact. They’re both equally as funny, really, I just saw Pretentious Latin Name first. I don’t really need to explain why it’s funny, do I?
