The Face Melter: Scaling Factors

I finally decided to take a look at SimulationCraft. I’d taken this long specifically because, okay I’m lying to you, I’d had a look before and I didn’t understand what the heck I was doing with it. Until I came across this guide, which admittedly did take me a while to read through but it’s so utterly simple that I feel a bit silly for waiting so long.

I thought I’d go through with you the basics of how to use this programme. I’m sure there are ways to use it that will tell you so much more, but SimulationCraft isn’t the simplest of programmes as far as I can tell so I’m starting with the basics and I’ll find more guides, tips, and fiddle a bit. If, like me, you’ve never used SimulationCraft before but would like to see your own scaling factors and details to improve yourself rather than base your theory on somebody else’s numbers, then hopefully this will be helpful to you.

The only thing you’ll need to change is in the scaling tab. You will want it to look like the following as a Shadow Priest.

Next, import your armory for analysis. You will have the armory page open up, and a few other options. The only bits you really need to care about are these, to keep it simple. Top left, bottom left, and bottom right.

Once you have imported, your character’s details will appear. At the bottom right, the same place as the import button, you will see this.

While you wait for your profile to load you will be able to see the bar moving. Then you can see the results.

The results page will give you a range of information about your character. Have a look through, it’s very useful. Just a few examples from my own results. With an optimal raid situation, I should be capable of about 9k dps. As with anything, this won’t take into account movement time, taking care of adds, any stuns i.e. the bone spikes on Lord Marrowgar, however, it’s nice to see what you could be doing with full raid buffs on a Patchwerk style fight.

This pie chart tells me which of my abilities should be doing the most damage. If you use a damage meter, probably Recount or Skada, or a parse, ((Usually World of Logs, but there are others)) this will show you what you should be doing, which you can compare to what you are doing. If there’s a big difference then this will allow you to play around with things a bit to improve a little.

Further down, there is an ‘action priority list’, which tells you how to prioritise any spells and buffs while in combat. Generally, you will probably know all of this already. Food buffs, flasks, speed potions, Shadowfiend, followed by DoTs, and so on. There are plenty of topics about it on ShadowPriest.com though if you’d like to have a look, it’s there. It isn’t specifically a rotation list, but it does tell you what you should prioritise, i.e. if Shadow Word: Pain falls off, it should be the first thing you refresh.

The part I’m most interested in is the scaling factors. In basic, these tell you how each stat will scale with your gear, spec, glyphs, and so on. Hit will always be ranked as the highest stat because if you don’t have enough it will net you a nice dps loss. However, you also don’t want to have too much, because then it becomes useless. I think most people’s scaling factors will be fairly similar, spell power being the major stat with haste being fairly close to it, crit a little behind, and spirit and intellect at the bottom. Mine interested me, take a look.

As you can see, haste is rated a tiny bit higher than spell power, whereas I expected it to be the other way around. Crit and spirit are ranked fairly close to each other as well, I expected intellect and spirit to be quite low down near enough equal, nowhere near as high as crit. Very interesting.

SimulationCraft works with other classes and specs too, so do take a look at your results if you’re interested.

Posted Edited: Because apparently people get testy over the tiniest of things.

I’ve been playing my mage, Twylite, a fair bit lately. It’s fun when you’re feeling a bit blah about the game to pop on an alt you haven’t really explored yet, get her spec, glyphs, gear just right, and attempt to top the meters in every random you do as Frost. Maybe that’s just me, I like damage meters, they make DPS classes fun for me.

Well, when I was about level 35 and Scarlet Monastery was all the rage, I queued, got in a group and lo and behold the warrior tank could hold aggro! I Blizzarded my little Blood Elf heart out, and we started chatting, the tank, me and the druid healer. We decided to stick with that group and re-queue for a few. The druid healer was a really nice guy, he gave both me and the tank some friendly advice, not the kind of advice you expect to find in a pug these days. He told me to try single targeting the mob with the most HP in a pack of 4 or less, I think it was along those lines, I’ve since adapted it anyway, and it has helped me in dungeons with my mana issues.

It was a lovely group and unusual to find that and have everybody want to stick around, well, everybody who counts. The silent hunter left at the end of the first one. The warrior was on my server, I added him to my friends list and chatted a little after we had finished. Shame he hasn’t really been online at the same time as me since because it would have been quite cool to queue up again together. Keep trying guys, there are good pugs out there!

Changes and Decisions

I’ve been running around hoping to get a Death’s Choice or Deathbringer’s Will for so long (not gonna happen if I’m not doing 25 mans, I know!) that I didn’t stop to think that perhaps the Whispering Fanged Skull could possibly be an upgrade on my Greatness Card. I ran the numbers through Female Dwarf (I don’t have access to Excel, and I don’t like Open Office, this is why I can’t use the spreadsheet) and found it to be a roughly 100 dps upgrade if I replaced Greatness with the Skull. I actually took this trinket for Survival, as the Runestone isn’t going to be much use as a Survival hunter, so it’s been sat in my bank for a couple of weeks, I felt a little stupid!

While I was there, I checked a few more things. Would it be worth switching my Chimera Shot glyph to the Steady Shot glyph? I’d seen a few Marksman hunters doing this. If I need to use the hit talent as Marksman, why was I using Improved Barrage instead of Improved Steady Shot in an Arcane Shotless spec? Little things like that I’d neglected to check before, as it turns out, I had a few changes to make. Sometimes on a boss fight my fps will drop to about 4, mostly just high AoE fights, Razorscale is one with all the fires on the floor. Currently, our internet is lagging, has been since Monday afternoon. My latency ranges from 120ms to 4,000ms, with people teleporting around, my shots having to be queued while the game freezes for 10 seconds at a time, it actually makes me glad I’m not currently raiding.

So, I’ve hopefully upped Fae’s dps by a little, though there lies another question, another decision.. Do I transfer my hunter? When the latency is better, I’d love to be able to raid 25 man instances again, and I quite miss Terenas Alliance, but I don’t want to reroll again, Fae is my main. So, it would have to be a transfer – faction change deal, and I want to do it because I want to move over, NOT because some smelly druid is pestering me to /glares at Elsen. The decision might possibly be the right one, but I have to choose the right guild for me too. I’ve already decided what race she would be, come on, female Draenei are too awesome.

Tips on Heroicing as a Hunter

I think everybody at some point will venture into heroics, whether casual or not so casual. I have had a few people ask me advice about heroicing as a hunter and I have picked up a few tips on making heroics go faster. Of course, I assume the majority of you reading this already know this stuff, and bear in mind this is how I do heroics. However, there are alts and new 80s whom this will benefit. I play as Marksman, though I know not everybody does. For anything I’ve missed, check my hunter guides.

Gear

The first thing you want to know about, I guess as a newcomer at least, is gear. Well, as of patch 3.3 you can now get Emblems of Triumph from any heroic or raid (excluding Icecrown Citadel, which gives Emblems of Frost). These give you Trial of the Crusader level gear, the raid just below Icecrown, including the 4 parts of Tier 9. Although, don’t get 4 pieces, just two, preferably the helm and legs. The 4 set is not worth it. The non-set shoulders from Triumph are decent, as is the agility ring. To check what else you can get and from where, I have spent a lot of time creating and updating a hunter pre-raid gear list, please feel free to use it.

Damage

I also assume some of you may want to know how best to deal the most damage. I tend to volley trash of 3 or more mobs, less than that I’ll stick to my shot priority, which will also be used on bosses. After Misdirecting the tank, pop any CDs and nuke the boss down as much as you can using the same ‘rotations’. Another factor that may affect your damage is your gemming, enchants, spec and the type of ammo you are using. The best ammo you can get at the moment is Iceblade Arrows/Shatter Rounds. These can be made by engineers with honoured Ashen Verdict rep, the mats to make them may not be very much, but they will charge you a little bit because it’s still a little rare to find a crafter. I think a stack of 1,000 on my server sells for about 10g.

Threat

I recommend when you join a heroic setting the tank as your focus (target them and /focus). If you find they can’t keep up with your threat, you can use Misdirect on every pull/when it’s needed and off cooldown. Using the following macro:

#showtooltip
/cast [target=focus, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=focustarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=target, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=targettarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=pet, nodead, exists] Misdirection

If all else fails USE FEIGN DEATH. I’ve seen so many hunters who won’t feign when they gain aggro, and other classes would kill to have that ability. It’s an instant and complete aggro drop for a hunter and one of my favourite abilities in PuGs.

Pet Control

I use 2 macros to control my pet properly, which saves a lot of clicking. The first is to send my pet in and cast Hunter’s Mark at the same time (which I also have on my bars with a separate macro excluding it for times when I’m grouped with a hunter using Improved Hunter’s Mark).

#showtooltip;
/cast Hunter’s Mark
/petattack

The second is very important. There are times your pet will have a mind of its’ own and run off into packs and all sorts.. and so I also use a macro to pull my pet back to me whenever I need to.

/petfollow

Mana

Another thing you may notice while heroicing is mana issues. You can’t sit down and drink all of the time, but you also don’t want to use Aspect of the Viper while damaging too much. So the moment the boss/mob dies, pop Aspect of the Viper. When you reach full mana or the next mob/boss, pop Aspect of the Dragonhawk (Aspect of the Hawk for lower levels). If you’re a blood elf, also make good use of Arcane Torrent. It’s only a small amount of mana back, but it’s still a small amount of time you don’t have to spend in Viper. If really necessary, you can use Viper while dpsing but the idea is to reduce dps time in Viper by as much as possible, one idea is to just use it while using Steady Shot, then pop back to Dragonhawk for your other shots, if you need to Viper at all. To make a little space on your bars for switching, I have yet another macro. It will cast Dragonhawk first if not already up, if it is, it will cast Viper, and then back to Dragonhawk when you use it again.

/cast Aspect of the Dragonhawk
/cast Aspect of the Viper

Relationships Within Azeroth II

As you may have noticed, but probably haven’t, from my armory profile in the sidebar, I have rejoined my last guild, Dice. I’m going to keep the reasons I originally left between me and a handful of friends, but it’s now under new leadership, and I have a lot of faith in these guys to make Dice a decent guild.

Really though, I miss my friends, and of course I love raiding with Dan. We always used to have our 10 man groups, in TBC we ran Kara on a Friday night, in Wrath we always did Naxx 10, moved onto Ulduar which essentially in the end I lost my place in because I moved over to Terenas to play around a bit, and when I came back we got a Trial 10 group going. The problem with Trial 10 is that just before they released Anub’erak, I needed to take a short break. I can’t remember if this was my Aion break or my LotRO break, but either way, I obviously lost my place in the group which I expected and since about that time I’ve not only been really desperate for a new ranged weapon, but have felt rather dejected in the game, which lead to me mostly farming achievements.

Now, I really really want to give raiding a crack. I’ve rejoined Dice under the premise that there will be changes, and I know the new GM (who is a lovely fluffy cow) and the other officers want to see the same changes as I do. This makes the going back a hell of a lot easier. Already I’m noticing changes and I really think these guys can do a great job with the guild. I’m joining as a trial, I want to make sure I’m upto it, if last night was anything to go by, I think I’ll be able to stick around for a long time.

All I need to do is remember to disable a few mods before raid because 5fps is not good enough for DPSing.. remember to keep farming those mammoths in Storm Peaks next to the Brunnhildar Village, the drop rate on mammoth meat is pretty good, also get a bit of chilled meat and some leather, on top of this their respawn rate is awesome. Oh yeah, there goes my tangent. Basically, I need a little gear and practise to catch up with the other guys again because I’ve been out of the raiding loop for so long, I’m trying to keep up with my reading and I’m very interested in checking out a few of the blog posts on cooldown management, forcing trinket procs and so on, though I have been respeccing, regemming and fixing up bits of gear where I can. I’m getting there, if I can manage 7k on Jaraxxus in a pug, I’m sure I can get there while in a guild raid.

What is the ‘Relationships Within Azeroth’ bit about you ask? Well, having fun with friends is after all what this game is about for me, and I love it when things look to be coming together. So here’s to messing about in Orgimmar at silly hours.

DPS Survey

*Meekly jumps on the meme bandwagon*
Hinenuitepo of Death Goddess seems to be the one to introduce a DPS meme. There’s been the healing survey, the original, from Miss Medicina, and a tanking survey, from Koriel of whatisboom?, and we finally have a DPS survey.

What is the name, class, and spec of your primary dps?

Fae, Hunter, Marksman (with a BM dual spec for soloing)

What is your primary dpsing environment? (i.e. raids, pvp, 5 mans)

Mostly raids though at the moment I’m guildless so I tend to be forced to pug raids right now, sometimes 5 mans though not a lot of grouping going on currently. Hoping to get into a guild and change that soon.

What is your favorite dps spell/ability for your class and why?

Can I choose Feign Death? There’s nothing better than “PRETEND TO DIE!” Especially when you’re with a low geared or lazy tank, I’m like some kind of threat bomb. Otherwise I guess Explosive Shot, I know I don’t play Survival anymore but the timing of Lock and Load is fun to play around with.

What dps spell do you use least for your class and why?

Probably Deterrence.. I’m an idiot and forget to use it when I really probably should. I’m always told how awesome it is, but, I guess it’s a part of how much I suck at PvP.

What do you feel is the biggest strength of your dps class and why?

I’d say being able to Misdirect a little of your threat onto the tank, Feigning to drop aggro when it’s needed, and being able to crank out some really good damage.

What do you feel is the biggest weakness of your dps class and why?

I’m going to say weapons. There isn’t one weapon that another class will think “oh well, that’s one for the hunters”, because now we either have to fight the 2hander crowd, who I think would actually tear your head off if you took their Betrayers and so on, then there’s the ferals, who say how the DPS from that weapon benefits them a lot more then us hunters. Woot. So we get the cast offs. I’m not accepting “but you get the ranged weapons” as an excuse because rogues/warriors get dibs on any thrown weapons, druids and death knights get their own ranged slots, yet we still have to wait for cast offs. Though I’m not saying it should change because it is fair, but that’s my perspective. Also, Volley breaks weapons.

In a 25 man raiding environment, what do you feel, in general, is the best dps assignment for you?

Whichever target is tanked by the tank with the most threat to be honest! As I said, threat bomb. Though honestly, it doesn’t really matter too much, I can put my pet on the melee target, while I go on the ranged, or I can go on the melee target. I can single target, AoE, have enough shots to damage while moving. So, as long as I’m not told I should sit in the corner, it’s not too important in my opinion.

What dps class do you enjoy dpsing with most and why?

This question can be interpreted in 2 ways. The first being which DPS class do I to play my hunter alongside, and the second which one do I prefer playing overall.

  1. Probably a good sundering warrior, and an enhancement shaman. Reduced armour and yummy totems make me happy.
  2. Hunter. I do enjoy shadow priest a lot, but I’ve been known to grow bored of shadow priest, not of hunter.

What tanking class do you enjoy dpsing with least and why?

I don’t actually care as long as I’m not pulling aggro from them even when I spam Misdirect, and they don’t die too easily. I’m used to prot paladins because of Dan. Death knights at the beginning of Wrath freaked me out a little because they were using DPS weapons and didn’t turn into any kind of giant fluffy animal! That’s just wrong. I guess feral druid tanks, they had really bad threat mechanics for so long, I’ve noticed the decent bears have got a lot better at threat now, but they’re still limited to AoE tanking. I feel bad for them but I guess it’s the tanking class which I’ve met with the most fail in PUGs.

What is your worst habit as a dps?

Being so used to Dan’s awesome threat and such that I forget not all tanks have Heroic Trial gear and get lazy with Misdirects.. *whistles*

What is your biggest pet peeve in a group environment while dpsing?

When the tank moves the multiple mobs out of my Volley area! Stop it!

Do you feel that your class/spec is well balanced with other dps?

I think so, hunters seem to be at a good point DPSwise. I’m really quite happy with the class as a whole.

What tools do you use to evaluate your own performance as a DPS?

Omen I suppose counts, and Recount. WWS if the guild I’m in uses it but they don’t always. I check Recount a lot though to make sure I’m doing okay, if not, I get reading.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about your class?

  1. Huntards are all so stupid
  2. Hunter’s easy, all you have to do is spam one button.

What do you feel is the most difficult thing for new dpsers of your class to learn?

I think it can be difficult for new hunters to learn which stats to go for. I’ve seen a lot of gemming and enchanting for haste and crit when it’s not needed, people don’t always know when to gem for AP/ARP/AGI, and it can be a little complicated to find out without being told, for new players that is.

What dps class do you feel you understand least?

Warrior, I’ve never played one past 25, which I sadly deleted to make an alliance character on my realm which I again later deleted to make another warrior. I zone out when they’re spoken about amongst friends, I’ve never read into the class and I generally don’t have a clue. Shame though, I’d like to try it.

What add-ons or macros do you use, if any, to aid you in dps?

They should be all in my hunter guides pages. Addons I use Hunter Timers, Omen, OmniCC, Quartz (Forte for my priest). Macros, I use a Misdirect macro, pet follow and pet attack macro so I don’t have to click, Kill Command and Silencing Shot tied in with Chimera and Aimed, stopcasting Feign, and a quick Aspect switch.

[Your class's preferred basic stat] over other stats or balanced stat allocation, and why?

Generally, when it comes to gemming and enchanting, you’ll go for agility. Unless you’re BM then perhaps not, unless that’s changed now, I don’t know. However, if there’s an agility socket bonus, needing a yellow gem, agility crit. Sometimes it can be wise to gem for armor pen, but I can never understand people who gem for haste of any kind because it’s almost useless for hunters, and full crit gems.. agi/crit I understand but full crit gems I can’t understand at all why anybody would think they’re worth using.

Gonna tag Saresa at Destructive Reach, and Cassandri at Hots & Dots, interested to see your responses :)

Squeezing the DPS

There’s a very interesting player spotlight today on Kripparrian of Exodus EU on World of Raids. He talks a lot about using Auto Shot effectively while on the move, forcing the internal cooldowns on trinkets to proc early so they’re ready later for Bloodlust/Heroism, basically, how to move out of the shit without dying, and still being very high damage. The build he uses doesn’t include Improved Arcane Shot, which allows him to take it out of his rotation, using it as a filler shot on the move, basically it’s the Marksman build for those with very good gear and a lot of Armor Pen.

It got me to thinking, do I make use of my cooldowns and shots enough when I do raid? Am I really as effective with my movement in fights as I think I am? Looking at this, I will admit that I probably don’t. I never got round to learning the Jump Shot technique to let out a few more auto shots, I use Disengage but probably not enough, I forget to use Multi-Shot instead of Aimed on multiple targets, purely because I guess I’m lazy, but it’s time I picked myself up and sorted it out.

If I can manage about 6k DPS on Lord Jaraxxus 25, in a pug, that’s okay, I was proud of that, but what if I can squeeze more? I’ve been picking at my spec and glyphs for weeks, and at some point I need to decide whether to get my Armor Pen up a bit with gems or try to get more from gear. I’ve been checking a few people on WoW Meter Online, and many of them have specced into Focused Aim, which I suppose on fights like Anub’erak is very useful if you’re using Steady Shot a lot more. I’m currently sat on about 70% Armor Pen, so at the moment, I think I will give this spec a try and see how that goes.

I will say one thing though, aside from a few threat issues, I have noticed a nice DPS increase since I specced MM, and I am enjoying it about as much as I enjoyed Survival. Also, I’m not a complete min-maxer, there’s a part of me which would love to spec Jewelcrafting and Blacksmithing or even Engineering, but I’ve always been a Skinner and Leatherworker and I have an attachment to those professions, I don’t like to reroll professions unless I find one to be particularly useless. I like to pick up rare patterns, and I have picked up a few Ulduar/Trial patterns, I like finding Arctic Furs when I’m grinding, would suck to lose that. Hey ho, here’s to some more DPS squeezing.

Armour pen – nerfed!

I had a fairly long post planned about the Armour pen nerf and how happy I was… However my PC had other ideas, I forgot to save the draft in Word, didn’t have chance to save the draft in WordPress… so of course I lost the post when my PC decided it was a toaster and I really can’t be bothered to retype it all right now, I’m sorry, I have dailies I want to do and a druid I want to get the heck out of Zangarmarsh.

Summary of the previous post, Armour Pen is being nerfed to 110% instead of 125% because too many classes were using this stat over every other stat. I like this change because I’m quite happy playing Survival, and I don’t want to feel like I’m nerfing myself by playing that rather than stacking Armour Pen and speccing MM. So just for today, all hail Ghostcrawler (and if this is another bad joke I will be sad).

IREALYHOPETHISNAMEWILLFI

Joined my boyfriend’s and a few friend’s guild on my blood elf hunter, Fae, yesterday. I got a spot in the raid and after refreshing myself a little, had to remember how low FPS 25 man Hodir works all over again. On top of that, we were going for hard mode, so I had to find as many beams as I could without a pile of ice landing on my face. After a few tries confused over why i was stuck with 5k DPS, because I know most of my gear is Naxx 25 gear, but I also have a few very decent pieces, T8 2 set, the XT 10 man hardmode gun, I found myself able to hit around 7-8k if I made good use of the beams, CDs, haste pots, bloodlust (heroism), which you know was very nice to see myself doing with not-so-fantastic gear. We had to wipe a few times because of low DPS. Finally got it down with Dan (Ryyus, my boyfriend, the prot paladin) MTing, and a group of mages and a moonkin hitting somewhere between 10k and 16k DPS.. so fucking insane, seriously.

We also made an alt 10 man guild called <IREALYHOPETHISNAMEFI>, planning on doing some Ulduar 10 and Crusader’s Coluseam 10 man on our alts. I still really want to try a resto/balance druid, have one at level 48 that just needs a name change (she’s called Bananafaerie becuase of a 2 year old guild joke which isn’t at all funny anymore, not even to us) and I’ll be fine to level and gear it for these alt runs which should be really fun. Until then I have a Naxx 25 geared holy paladin I can use, once my hunter gets a spot elsewhere of course. All in all, a good night :D
