20 Days of Warcraft – Guild Names

Day 8 – Favourite guild name you’ve come across?

I’m going to have to say that I love a funny name, or a good reference. I get bored of all the latin and single word guild names, and so I present my two favourite guild names:

  • Pining for the Fjords
  • Pretentious Latin Name

Knowing that Pining for the Fjords was taken on Vashj, because that’s where I stole it from, I had to make this guild! So I made it as my bank guild on Terenas.. however, it’s so good I use it for my guild over there. I’ve always been a big Monty Python freak and I absolutely adore this reference!

Pretentious Latin Name I spotted on Terenas, a fair while before Single Abstract Noun came to be, in fact. They’re both equally as funny, really, I just saw Pretentious Latin Name first. I don’t really need to explain why it’s funny, do I?

20 Days of Warcraft – Names

Day 5 – The meaning behind your mains name?

I fear this will be a reasonably short post today. I don’t think I have much to say or any images to back it up. Let’s see.

I have written a post previously about how I choose my characters names. In which, I quote:

One way to name a character is to just throw a jumble of letters together and see if they sound okay. This is how I named a lot of my characters, including Jaedia and Seithir. You have to be fairly sensible with this one because you could end up with a character name that sounds ridiculous, however, there is less likelihood of any name you decide on being taken.

See, originally, Seithir was a name I had chosen for my Troll Shaman. I threw the letters together, pronounced them in my head as “Sigh-thar” (you would be surprised how many people have said they can’t pronounce my name) though really, it’s not entirely important, and from there decided it was a good name. There is no more meaning behind it than that. I got the Shaman to level 7 and gave up. I didn’t like the Troll race much, and I really struggled with the Shaman class until very, very recently. So, when I chose to make a Blood Elf Priest instead of the Undead one I had levelled to 22 already, I thought Seithir suited her a lot better than the Troll Shaman. Thus, my main became known as Seithir.

Oh and what do you know, an image of my Priest from around level 20ish! That’s an old one :)

Back!

Hey guys, The Lazy Sniper has been down for a while due to server switching, huge domain issues, and having to rush off for real life stuff for a couple of weeks. If you’ve been following me here (clicky, clicky) or on Twitter, you probably know the drill. Seeing as lazy-sniper.com became locked (unless I paid my previous host an extortionate amount of money.. yeah no thanks), it was pointed out to me that perhaps this was a brilliant time to finally go through that name change I’d considered back when I switched from my Hunter to my Shadow Priest. After a heck of a lot of umming and ahhing and not actually being in front of a PC, I finally decided on ‘Jaedia’s Menagerie’. Why? Because I’m a massive pet collecting freak. And mounts too.

The theme stays, I just need to fiddle around with the header a little.. maybe, and work out how to get all of my images pointing to the right URL so that my pages don’t look so, well, dead. Yes, I am aware that almost all of my images are broken aside from the 2 I have manually fixed (the header and the signature). So update any bookmarks or links you may have, you’ve got the name and you can link to the following:

  • menagerie.jaedia.net

Sorry for such a long hiatus! It was really out of my hands, but I’m back now. My blogging may be a little lax at the moment during the pre-expansion lull (yes, I’ve hit that, but I’m still playing a little), however, I am still here, and I will still be blogging. Feel free to spread the word if you like about the name and url change.

Update: I completely forgot to mention RSS feed, I have redirected the old feed to the new address (thank you for reminding me, Poneria!), so hopefully you won’t have to change your feed address unless you were using the default feed. Feedburner won’t need to be changed though, that is still:

Lost Faith

Yeah.. I said I wasn’t going to post about Real ID, and technically I’m not, though it has definitely sparked a lot of emotion in a lot of people. Now, of course, this has all come from Blizzard saying that in order to post on the official forums in Cataclysm, your real first and last names, as you gave to Battle.net, will be shown when you post in order to “combat trolling”. A heck of a lot of people don’t like this. My name’s damn common in the UK and the US. On Facebook alone I find 511 others that share my name, so while I don’t think that my name being out there is a huge security risk, ((though of course, with some deducting, it probably is – however I’m not quite that paranoid, I tend to keep myself to myself mostly)) for some people it’s much bigger, and with such a huge uproar against this, you’d think Blizzard might back down? Wrong.

Now, I’m not pretending I know all of the details, in honesty, all I really know is they’ve signed some big deal with.. Facebook? And they won’t be backing down. Well, hurray for treating your customers well! Usually, when people churn out the usual “I pay £9 a month for this game and deserve better service than this” I might perhaps scoff a little, because usually that’s a pretty lame argument - you pay a monthly fee to play the game. However, when something Blizzard does makes you realise they really are just one huge multi-national, commercial company, well, it kinda makes you lose faith a little bit.

I personally thought that Blizzard cared about this game and well, this has shaken the community. A lot of people feel alienated, using your real name online is a privacy risk. Sure, some people do it, at their own risk, but when you sign a privacy contract, then they say they’ll give up your personal details that easily because of some other contract, guess that makes the internet dragons seem a little less worth the £9 a month. I’ve heard of so many people quitting the game over this. Some are doing the “ugh I’m quitting!” and then logging in to raid Icecrown or whatever, but a lot are actually cancelling their accounts and this time I honestly cannot blame them ((of course, there are also a hell of a lot who are only thinking about quitting over this, a lot won’t, some will)). The worst part? This is exactly what businesses out to make money are like.

Incase you’re wondering, I haven’t made a decision on how annoyed at Blizzard I might be right now, being on a break myself at the moment I don’t care as much as I otherwise would, but I’m enjoying catching up on the years of Desperate Housewives I’ve missed. Why did nobody ever tell me I should watch this show before?

Announcement & Question

I suppose, really, this has been a long time coming. I’ve been burnt out on my Hunter since around Christmas, maybe even before. I quit raiding to try to enjoy the game again, I chilled out, played a few alts, did a few achievements, but I didn’t raid. Now I think it’s time for me to hang up my bow and quiver, and go back to my Shadow Priest, who will be staying Horde. The main reasons for this are currently having to be kept quiet (aside from a couple of friends I have mentioned it to) for the time being, but I won’t be playing my Hunter as my main any more. Just because I am going to be playing on Vashj for the time being, doesn’t mean I particularly like it there, aside from a handful of people, so I do plan to transfer near to Cataclysm, few months over here yet.

Priest is, of course, the class I have played the most overall. I played her for most of TBC, a few months in Wrath, and I have caught up on the theorycraft that I missed, so I know the class pretty well, but of course there’s always more to know. If you know of any Shadow Priestly blogs I haven’t included on my blogroll, please let me know so that I can add them to my reader.

This doesn’t mean that I will be quitting blogging. In fact, that’s part of the reason for this post. I’m a little unsure on what to do with the blog because I started as a Hunter blog, and named it as such. I’ve been around for a while as ‘the Lazy Sniper’ and in lieu of me rerolling, I’m wondering if perhaps I should change the name? I’ve asked a few people so far, a couple have said I should keep it as it is, but what do you guys think? Would it feel weird reading posts from a Priest on ‘the Lazy Sniper’ and think I should change to a much more general name like ‘Jae’s Tavern’ (just an example)? Part of me isn’t so fond of keeping the name when Hunter is no longer my main, but then I have to move around a lot, so I’d really like to hear what you think, please let me know!

PS. Yes, this does mean I might play around with the theme again and find a new RSS button (which I’m not so pleased about :( I love my current button). Once all of the design things have been sorted out, I will introduce my Priest properly.

What’s In A Name?

Across the interwebs, I am remembered by many names. Hadlo from those who knew me from my first guild on my Undead Warlock, maybe just one or two people now. Seithir by most people on Vashj, and during TBC, a little of Wrath in Endure, from my Shadow Priest. Fae from those who know me from Dice and a couple from Supreme. And of course, Jaedia from the general interwebs and Respice.

I find it important to choose a name that not only suits your character, but suits you, and this is not just for the roleplay guys. A name that won’t make you cringe in a few months time to be remembered by. I saw somebody on the forums called ‘Icrapmyself’, he says that no GM will call him by his name, just “Hey <you>” and would you really want to be remembered like that? So, how to choose your name?

One way to name a character is to just throw a jumble of letters together and see if they sound okay. This is how I named a lot of my characters, including Jaedia and Seithir. You have to be fairly sensible with this one because you could end up with a character name that sounds ridiculous, however, there is less likelihood of any name you decide on being taken.

Another direction you can take is to simply google things that are semi related to the game, your class, your race, or maybe even your abilities (i.e. nature, holy, shadow, rage, etc.) and find something to suit you that way. Of course, there is a high chance that a lot of these names will be taken but it’s worth a shot.

There are also some name generators out there you can have a play with, I don’t have any on hand but search for one or two and play around with them, I found my Cow Druid’s name from one of these.

Last but not least, baby naming sites. As stupid as you might feel looking at them to find a name for your fantasy rpg character, they have a very extensive list of names and you will probably find something you like there so long as staring at names beginning with the letter L doesn’t make your eyes go funny after a while.

So long as you find something that suits you, your character, and something that you’re comfortable with, then you have your name. How do you name your characters?

IREALYHOPETHISNAMEWILLFI

Joined my boyfriend’s and a few friend’s guild on my blood elf hunter, Fae, yesterday. I got a spot in the raid and after refreshing myself a little, had to remember how low FPS 25 man Hodir works all over again. On top of that, we were going for hard mode, so I had to find as many beams as I could without a pile of ice landing on my face. After a few tries confused over why i was stuck with 5k DPS, because I know most of my gear is Naxx 25 gear, but I also have a few very decent pieces, T8 2 set, the XT 10 man hardmode gun, I found myself able to hit around 7-8k if I made good use of the beams, CDs, haste pots, bloodlust (heroism), which you know was very nice to see myself doing with not-so-fantastic gear. We had to wipe a few times because of low DPS. Finally got it down with Dan (Ryyus, my boyfriend, the prot paladin) MTing, and a group of mages and a moonkin hitting somewhere between 10k and 16k DPS.. so fucking insane, seriously.

We also made an alt 10 man guild called <IREALYHOPETHISNAMEFI>, planning on doing some Ulduar 10 and Crusader’s Coluseam 10 man on our alts. I still really want to try a resto/balance druid, have one at level 48 that just needs a name change (she’s called Bananafaerie becuase of a 2 year old guild joke which isn’t at all funny anymore, not even to us) and I’ll be fine to level and gear it for these alt runs which should be really fun. Until then I have a Naxx 25 geared holy paladin I can use, once my hunter gets a spot elsewhere of course. All in all, a good night :D

Thoughts and ponderings

I’ve been browsing around various WoW related blogs and such, so aside from getting myself a copy of Photoshop so that I can fix up the layout a little bit (sadly I couldn’t get WoW Model Viewer working though :( ), I’m starting to think about perhaps moving over, getting a different name? I called this blog hunterstuff purely because at first it was an archive of beginner information for myself, but after going back and playing hunter for a fair bit of time, I thought I’d use the space. There is always the chance I might reroll, or want to blog about an alt, though in my opinion the title works for me. If anybody is reading this yet, any feedback on the title? I don’t think it’s too late to change :)

Another thing I am definitely considering is getting myself hosted and using WordPress.org. I’ve been trying to incorporate certain things into my blog such as Wowhead links, which I thought would work nicely on the pre-raid gear list section specifically. However, it has turned out that certain things I won’t be able to do with a free host. I won’t be hosting immediately because I want to give this a few days and see how it goes first. Though I will be looking for a decent and affordable host which will be reasonably simple to use with WordPress.org.

The different pages I have added are purely there as a guide, this I would like to stress as some of the information may be my own personal opinion and you are welcome to disagree of course. It can be used for beginner hunters, unsure hunters, etc. I am in no way claiming finality.

Finally, for the time being at least, the graphics, if I can find myself a working version of Wow Model Viewer, as the version I found last night included shadows rather than models of characters, I couldn’t import my character from the armoury and eventually I had a C++ error crash..thingy :P So, I’m having to work with screenshots, fanart (if I can find any I like without stealing) and praying that Photoshop works.
